For any country to develop, the country's infrastructure, such as roads, airports and ports, must be developed.
According to the 'bright vision' policy of this government in our country, the program to develop one lakh kilometers of roads is progressing very fast. The recent handing over of a particular block of streets to the people was a success. Following this, the government is working on a number of programs to further expand this. Road development can improve the economic development of the country and facilitate the livelihoods of the people of the country. These are driven by the planning and proper construction of expressways and rural road systems.
After the end of the 30 year war in our country, the development projects for expressways undertaken by the government of Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa and the massive projects of road reconstruction and construction of new roads took place throughout the country. At that time the country also saw an economic growth stage due to this. Roads were set up to facilitate the movement of commercial products between the districts and to increase the livelihoods of the people. The condition of the connecting roads, especially in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, has grown exponentially with foreign aid under the government of Mahinda Rajapakse. With the bridges connecting these roads and the new canal connection facilities, the transport facilities required by the people were repaired and the country was moving towards economic growth. During the regime change in 2015, many programs were slowed down and abandoned due to political revenge and the austerity of the then government.
Currently, under the government of His Excellency President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, programs are underway to improve all roads in the country. Analysts are of the opinion that the development of road transport, apart from the short-term vision, will help the economic development of the country in the long run. Due to this, the construction of roads and expressways in the backward villages with the help of foreign aid are projects that are projected for the future development of the country.
Due to the corona epidemic, road traffic across the country has come to a standstill and now the traffic on the roads is increasing as the country returns to normal. Traffic congestion in urban areas around the capital, such as Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Negombo and Matara, remains unresolved. Although flyovers are being set up around Colombo to address this, they will not be a permanent solution. With this in mind, the government has launched various projects. While exploring ways to solve Colombo city traffic congestion, giving priority to rural road projects in the country could help improve people's livelihoods and contribute economically. Also, with the resumption of tourism in the country, travel between the districts is likely to be curtailed by properly paved roads to attract tourists. Tourist sites can also be easily upgraded by taking tourists for easy travel between districts.
The expressways currently under construction in the country are being developed as a program to connect major cities. The journey time from Matara to Kottawa was 4 hours but now it is 2 hours due to the expressway. The 90-minute journey time between Colombo Nayaka Airport has been reduced to 30 minutes. Also, the Kurunegala and Kandy expressways are nearing completion. Travel between the economic hubs is greatly reduced and the country is awaiting professional advancement and economic growth as all work is done at a rapid pace.
With the introduction of fully electric vehicles in the country as per the President's 'clear vision' policy, it is considered a positive thing that connectivity facilities and technical facilities for them will be built in road systems across the country. It could also be taken as a measure to reduce the number of vehicles running on climate change-friendly fuels.
Furthermore, the transformation of the public transport sector, which is being used from time to time in the country, will help in the future economic development.
Yet we are still using the public transport sector as we were in the 1970s / 80s. By changing it and adopting new transport strategies we can further reduce traffic congestion and travel time in the country. Modern transportation strategies will greatly help to further develop the tourism sector.
Any country that is making progress economically has achieved its goal by developing such a transport sector. Our country is compelled to make all the necessary allocations and plans to achieve that goal. One has to understand well the people who are accused of taking loans from countries to build the road anyway. The aim of any government is to create structures to develop the country's economy and thereby increase the country's gross domestic product. They apply to all projects launched with a view to the opposite period. This is evidenced by the massive scheme of political revenge for regime change. Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port are no exception. Therefore, it must be wholeheartedly accepted that the country's road development infrastructure depends on the country's economic development.
