The total number of foreign employment received by Sri Lanka during the eleven month period was one thousand four hundred and seventy two. And on the fifth day twenty men went to work to Romania, and on the seventh day thirty-three to South Korea. It gives great impetus to the economy of the country. On the one hand, the country receives foreign exchange through foreign employment. On the other hand, the economic status of families with many children is rising. The government is interested in foreign employment and our foreign policy has set the stage for that.
In the case of Sri Lanka, the foreign employment market is recovering. The government was able to provide overseas employment to more than 100,000 people between January and December this year. Despite the high incidence of Govt epidemic last year, the government has been able to provide overseas employment to more than 20,000 people. Those jobs came from Romania, Cyprus, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The government also plans to raise $ 10 billion in foreign employment next year.
We can only hope that our overseas employment sector will expand further in the coming year. The background needed for that is well designed. Countries that had closed the foreign employment sector due to the Govt epidemic have begun to reopen. Since February 2020, South Korea has banned foreign employment. Currently it has been removed. Japan has also opened up foreign employment markets. South Korea and Japan are the two largest employers offering foreign employment in Sri Lanka. The number of overseas jobs to be created in the country by 2022 is estimated at 300,000.
The Govt epidemic has disrupted the job market even in rich countries. The best example is the United States. Unemployment is rising rapidly in the United States. One hundred and ninety-four thousand Americans lost their jobs last November, according to a report. An analytical article in the Guardian notes that unemployment in the United States will intensify in the coming years. This week, ninety people were laid off at a company in the United States. The company has expressed its condolences to those who lost their jobs. The United States is the number one economy in the world. Currently its employment crisis is serious.
Employment is a key factor in a country's development. If the unemployment rate is high, it is a poor state. Youth unrest is on the rise in poorer countries. It will lead to political struggles. Foreign investors are not paying attention in states with political turmoil. The current government of Sri Lanka has expanded not only the foreign employment sector but also the local employment market. Sixty thousand graduates have been offered jobs in the public sector and steps have been taken to make their service permanent. As the country’s revenue streams expand, so does the market. As the market grows, so does the economy.
